Design Contest to Improve on Bigger Huger Labs Profile Widget

Pixie Photo Sharing

Okay so the above template is a complete rip off of the original Big Huge Labs Profile Widget but who cares because this is just the first of many templates we plan to offer.

Do you think you could do better?

We are calling on the community to help us come up with a new design for Pixie widget which stands out from the crowd. If you think you've got what it takes to design a killer looking widget, then go for it! We will pick our favourite from those submitted and implement it as a template for users here on Pixie.

Isn't that like a design contest? You betcha!

Design guide

  • Dimensions: width:500px height:100px
  • Thumbnail photos are available in the following sizes:
    • 100px x 66px
    • 48px x 32px
  • Thumbnails may be cropped (rectangular or square only) to make them fit in your design.
  • Users must be able to specify text and background colours.
  • Template should contain transparent regions to allow background colour to show through.
  • You retain the copyright in your design, but you must grant us an appropriate license to use it...
  • Only original Photoshop .psd or Fireworks .png layered files will be accepted as a valid submissions.

...oh and the winner gets €50 :)

Pixie users can create their Bigger Huger Labs profile widget here: http://pix.ie/widgets/create (make sure you're logged in)

Maybe I missed it but how does one submit an entry?  And a closing date?

The Magic eight ball was unable to help with either question ... ;-)

lechesolara

# by brian on on 2009-Apr-09

can we go ahead and use the widget thats created in the above link?

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-09

Hi PMan - Your eight ball must be broken ;)

Email your entries to help [at] pix.ie and we'll close it in 1 month (8th May 2009) How's that? :)

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-09

@brian - yes of course. Please feel free to use the existing widget. We will simply be adding more templates over time to give more choice.

Valentia

# by Valentia on on 2009-Apr-09

I wont be able to design one but I have added the widget to my sigs ;-) Nice ine.

# by RichardT on on 2009-Apr-09

Hmmm,I'll try to do this,But i'll fail :)

Shanemurphy

# by Shane Murphy on on 2009-Apr-09

Thanks a mill Marcus. Won't be able to design any widgets for you, but have already put the widget on my homepage. Can these be added as a sig to comments made on pix?

# by jennyrusks on on 2009-Apr-09

Sounds good, will give it a go.

The 2 entries above are excellent, how do I edit my own? Thanks!

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-10

@LifeByTheDrop just visit http://pix.ie/widgets/create and grab the code

# by Dan on on 2009-Apr-10

Oh that's mine up there hehe I'm Famous!!!:)

LifeByTheDrop

# by MickS on on 2009-Apr-10

Thanks Marcus, have it up but just wondering how to edit it to make it a bit different a la D. Jordan's and Bohoe's entries above. Thanks.

danieljordan13

# by Dan on on 2009-Apr-10

@lifebythedrop.

you'll be needing to do that yourself in something like lightroom or photoshop to do that. pix don't offer you that service. they just offer you the option to change the background and text colour of their existing image. hope that helps :)

Shanemurphy

# by Shane Murphy on on 2009-Apr-11

I like the idea of adding views & votes to the widget. Good idea Daniel.

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-11

I like the views/votes addition too...

dakar

# by dakar on on 2009-Apr-11

I lack the skills to contribute a design, but I'd like the option to include the best photos from the month/year along with the all time best and recent photos. I like the views/votes option too.

danieljordan13

# by Dan on on 2009-Apr-11

Thanks guys, well what i was going for was that PIX IS DIFFERENT AND BETTER THAN FLIKER in my opinion so why should we incorporate what they have in their widgets. Who cares how many contacts someone has, it's not going to make me want to go to their page just because they are popular. However a high count of profile views and votes would make me want to view their page. Just my thinking anyway. Even if my widget design doesn't win could you possibly add them to the new widget instead of contacts please marcus? Thanks again guys.

LifeByTheDrop

# by MickS on on 2009-Apr-12

@Daniel Jordan, thanks for the advice Daniel, much appreciated. M

lukaty

# by lukaty on on 2009-Apr-14

I'm with you Daniel, I would also preffer to see number of comments and views instead of contacts.
Marcus are you planning to create choice of dimensions? Some forums are restricted to smaller sizes of images.

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-14

@lukaty Yes I think various dimensions would be good. What standard dimensions are out there?

lechesolara

# by brian on on 2009-Apr-14

Marcus, Boards rules say a signature should not exceed 300X125 pixels.  Don't think its always enforced though

danieljordan13

# by Dan on on 2009-Apr-14

@lukaty thanks very much dude for the support on the idea.

@brian, boards do enforce the sig rule and the maximum dimensions are 125 x 500 pixels wide.

lechesolara

# by brian on on 2009-Apr-14

ok daniel I see they changed the rule on the size in February.  It used to be 300*125

forbairt

# by forbairt on on 2009-Apr-19

Weee ... :) my design is up ... based on forbairt colours but looks quite nice with white background / black background

Stuck to the

  • 100px x 66px
  • 48px x 32px

Thumb sizes as well though there is a 1px internal border

dioptrovic

# by dioptrovic on on 2009-Apr-20

Be the hokey that was quick, and entry D for Dioptrovic - could be a sign of luck!

In fairness looking at the other entries, "Luck be a lady, oh luck be a ladyahh" sing it with me "luck be a lady tonight!"

# by Stephen on on 2009-Apr-21

Is it possible to anti-alias the text in the widget?

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-21

@Stephen - Yes it might be. We'll look at that when we go about implementing the final widget.

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-21

Couple of points I should mention:

  1. Users have indicated a preference for "more stats". i.e. Views, Votes, Comments as well as Photos, Albums, Contacts etc
  2. Cropping an image is okay. Rotating, skewing and scaling might be too processor intensive for us to run with in a large scale environment. We'll see...
  3. The Pixie logo should be taken from http://pix.ie/logos and retain it's proportions. Daniel, the logo looks a little streched in your widget (we can fix that I'm sure).
  4. DON'T forget PORTRAIT photos! What will they look like? You widget should include a mix of landscape and portrait photos to indicate how each would be handled. Or just stick with square.

Thanks for all the entries so far - it really nice to see such variety!

Shanemurphy

# by Shane Murphy on on 2009-Apr-21

I really like the idea of the filmstrip used by dioptrovic.

Not sure the edges should be grey - perhaps the usual dark orange/brown of 35mm film.

I also like the idea of showing views & votes as used by Daniel.

Keep up the good work guys.

danieljordan13

# by Dan on on 2009-Apr-21

@marcus,

i noticed the stretched image too on mine after a few more were uploaded. If i get a few minutes spare during the week i'll amend it and email you on an updated version :)

ricky91t

# by RichardT on on 2009-Apr-24

Kicking off now,and the entries are looking good!

dakar

# by dakar on on 2009-Apr-24

Like Dioptrovic's film strip idea, but the clean lines and font of Julie's entry are winning for me so far.

Gambler

# by Gambler on on 2009-Apr-28

Just in regards to the functionality of the widget can I suggest an option that lets you have a mix of your most popular and your most recent pics (each second picture or some such) rather than either\or

sully

# by sully on on 2009-Apr-28

I assume we just email on the image to yourself, and if selected, you guys do the rest? Also, the talk about extra stats.. in my opinion its the quality of the photo that counts mostly. The contacts/views/votes/etc. are just little statistics to give an insight into how popular this person is.

PS Its Flickr Mr Jordan :p

marcus

# by Marcus on on 2009-Apr-28

@Gambler displaying different content is feasible and if a widget design called for that we could do it...

@Sully Yes, we do the rest :)

sully

danieljordan13

# by Dan on on 2009-Jun-08

Ya back yet? :P

I'd love to know what design you picked, I'd also love to know if you will perhaps be taking different aspects from all the entries. Looking at it now, i think combining some ideas would make for a better widget.

Congrats Julie, excellent design and was a clear winner from the outset. Nice and simple, clear and easy. Nothing over the top or different - just kept it simple in style and stunning in appearance.

Was good craic but the wait gave way for to much nail biting :P

How do I go about using any of the above? I like Daniel's in particular, would also love Diotrovics and Bstone's but they lack the photo views.
