Lion, London Zoo

Description

This Lion was being held in a separate enclosure while they cleaned his main area. He wasn't best pleased, pacing backwards and forwards at the entrance. When he saw me (just seconds after this shot) he charged and jumped at the glass - I very nearly dropped my camera (and something else!). Apparently he objects to big cameras says the zoo keeper. Noted!

Great expression/framing. We don't usually get to see a lion so up close like this--great capture of his mindset. Mind be strong in b/w as well. V.

While both versions have their merits, I think the colour is better as the warmth of colour draws the viewer in, particularly with the the lion's eyes and fur being the same colour keeps the viewer interested and gives it an almost human look. I also think the highlights are better balanced and less distracting than in the contrastier b/w.  I also think the eyes look smaller in b/w, which may just be due to the style of b/w conversion.  Nevertheless, the b/w is eyecatching as well.

Absolutely stunning shot Henry, its so unusual to see such a close up, detailled face shot like this. Magnificent animals and a magnificent shot.

Well done on the TOTD. Mick.

Congrats on the TOTD. I prefer this to the B&W - I think that unlike with human portraits, the colour shot conveys the aged look of the animal better!

another great choice for TOTD... you're doing a good job pixie!  Lovely texture and detail in this shot.  Like the vignetting too.
