Yes, these are originally shot as panoramics to be used in Virtual Tours, have a look at some of my work here: http://www.sphericalimages.com
To make one of these pano spheres you need a full 360 X 180 degree panorama and then you use the polar coordinates filter on photoshop to produce the effect.
All the images are shot with digital SLRs and stitched together. This shot uses HDR too.
