aha! I tried during the week for a first attempt to snap the darn thing with far less impact than what you've managed here. Was thinking about extension tubes but I guess it's a telescope that I need ;o) Well done - lovely shot

It's a slightly cooler area, amazing to think that the spot shown is probably 3 or 4 times bigger that the Earth!!....great Pic!

Wow... I've just read the title of this photo! Is this really the Sun? What is causing the spot?

Thanks for the link Marcus - that's a Noel Carboni shot - one of the world's top experts in image processing - great composite!

Thanks Marcus - it's a "different" rendition of the Moon but one which works very well I think.

Thanks Justin - I just filled in the info! The shot was taken through a 10" Dobsonian telescope with a Sony A700 DSLR mounted at the prime focus - ie so that the telescope became the camera's lens. It's a pretty simple setup as the Moon is sufficently bright that no motors are needed to move the 'scope against the Earth's rotation longer exposures of less bright objects do need this more complicated setup. Paul.
