In the end, I actually bought this tripod: http://www.manfrotto.us/compact-5-section-black-kit-with-ball-head-qr Very light (900gr) and folds up very small (30cm), yet feels very steady and opens to head height. Fits into my daybag no problems! Haven't been out in ages, so looking forward to some hikes in the spring
