I don't know whether Drogheda adopted star and crescent as symbols of the town in honour of Ottoman Empire or this device has its origin from King Richard (the Lionheart), in whose reign Drogheda was granted its charter in 1194 by Hugh de Lacy. (Actually, star and crescent are known as symbols of the Turks throughout of the world. In the year 1071, after the Battle of Manzikert and the defeat of the Byzantine army, the Seljuk Khan, Alp Arslan was roaming the battlefield where he saw the reflection of the crescent moon and the star on a pool of blood of Turkish warriors. After he saw this image, he decided that this would be the flag representing the Turks.)

But i know that, in 1845 during the famine, Ottoman aid welcomed by the Irish people. And Irish nobleman, gentlemen as well as it's citizens, sent their thanks to Ottoman Empire Abdulmecit (Khan Abdul mejit) with a letter of thanks. The original document which is now kept at the Topkapi Museum (in Istanbul) confirms that. See link below, you can find a copy of that letter.

So, i think the similarity  between the emblems of the Drogheda City and the logo of her Football Club and the Ottoman and Turkish flags are not a coincidence. :)
