Brian, I've enjoyed using the High Speed Sync on my old sigma flash gun, And then recently while browsing through the manual for my currrent flash I saw it can also do this.

I think using a flash was not needed but it's very handy for low angles like this, You can expose from the sky and then use the flash to give enough light to eliminate shadows, Also using a flash usually brings out more detail in the subject.
