pullandbang, MickS, docaoimh, aafke - thanks!  docaoimh I actually spilled very little... aafke, the secret is to tilt everything.. glasses taped to a base that is tilted, camera on a tripod tilted at the same angle.  pour water with food colouring into each glass carefully to get all the levels lined up.  I can take credit for the execution, but not for the idea.
