Béal Bocht

Description

Des Lavelle is a legend in his own lifetime. Des and his wife Pat have welcomed people to Valentia Island for many many years. Des has written books on the area and on the Skelligs. He has appeared on numerous TV programmes. His boat, the Béal Bocht still makes the daily trip to the Skelligs, sometimes with Des skippering or more likely, as in this photo, with another Valentia man, Kav, at the helm. Des can be contacted through his site at:http://www.skelligboattrips.com/.

Thanks everyone and Pixie for the TOTD. I brought up the light on the cabin in Lightroom. If you look at the large version you can see Kav's characteristic grin ;-)

Well captured and well deserved TOTD!

Valentia
# by Valentia on 2009-Aug-17

@ liamp; I used a 100-400 lens for this on a 40D. In lightroom Develop mode there is an adjustment brush on the top left. I selected this and painted in the window of the boat. While this was still selected I increased the exposure so that Kav's face became clear. It's a fantastic and easy tool to use.

@MiPiX: It was taken just after leaving the protection of Bray head. Just into the Atlantic where the waves became a bit choppy. It wasn't as bad as it looks here though. I was lucky enough to get the only splash that the boat made.

Thanks again everyone.

thanks for the info valentia, very helpful, i am using lightroom 1.4 and as far as i can see there is no adjustment brush , is your version newer?

Valentia
# by Valentia on 2009-Aug-18

Yes Liam. The brush is not in version 1. You can download a 30 day fully working copy of version 2 from the Adobe site to try out. It's worth the move though as usual Adobe try to rob you to upgrade.
